6 Ways to Spend Your Time in Sydney

1. Follow the Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk

Take the bus out to Coogee (about 40 minutes from Hyde Park) and walk the 5km past the picturesque Clovelly, Tamarama and Bronte beaches and through the most spectacular coastal cemetery to Bondi. Then stop for an Aperol Spritz at The Icebergs whilst taking in the iconic view over its sea swimming pool. Eat pizza at Pompeis just off the front.

2. Grab a Drink and a Bite in The Rocks

Head on up to the top of The Glenmore Hotel where you can sip on a drink (like a local Bilpin blush cider) whilst taking in views of the Opera House. Then head down to the Australian Hotel to try one of its kangaroo & emu, crocodile or mushroom pizzas (there may be a pizza theme).

3. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

One of the two most iconic structures in Sydney which you can climb should you wish to do so (or if, in my case, you have someone else sign you up). If you are not keen on heights, I’d say give this a miss. I’m not great with heights and managed it (just). Once you’re on it, you’re on, it’s about 3.5km in total and it’s a long way (133m down). But, if you do it, the views are absolutely brilliant. We did the twilight walk which I’d recommend as walking up you see the city during the day and waking back down you see the city from a completely different perspective in the dark.

4. Take the Ferry to Manly

Slightly less daunting and, to me, rather more pleasant, the ferry ride from Circular Quay to this Sydney suburb takes less than 20 minutes but you’ll wish it would last longer as the views are divine. Spend the day at the beach or drink at The Wharf. The Manly Pantry does a very good breakfast overlooking the beach and you’re best off booking in advance as it’s a popular spot.

5. See the Animals at Taronga Zoo

If you’re staying around Circular Quay or Darling Harbour you can buy a two day ferry pass (which will take you to Manly too – I wish we’d known this before we bought separate tickets) and zoo entry for $55. There are informative talks you can attend from kaolas to spiders and seals to birds. The zoo is vast and also gives beautiful views of Sydney. The zoo also sells a white chocolate, mango and coconut ice cream which is the yummiest and obviously the main reason for visiting a zoo.

6. Visit the Opera House & The Botanical Gardens

Going inside the Opera House is still on my to do list but there is no way you can come to Sydney and, like the bridge, miss it. In fact, I’d say you can’t miss it even if you tried. It pops into view everywhere. Afterwards walk through the gardens to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair (a viewing point, like a chair, carved into stone) for another beautiful view of the city.
